James and Rochelle Rimmer have recently won
gold in the Saitama Federation Shorinji Kempo Taikai in the couples
event. James Rimmer is a past student of QUT and a past President of the
QUT SG Shorinji Kempo club. After completing a Bachelor of Business in
1999, James has kept his ties to the University and volunteered his time
and energies free of charge as a senior student instructing at the QUT
SG Shorinji Kempo Club. Rochelle has recently taken up Shorinji Kempo in
order to be able to keep James in line where required. Rochelle
completed a Bachelor of Education (Primary) through QUT Kelvin Grove in
2000.
Earlier this year to further their
understanding of this martial art they set off to Japan together to
train with a famous Sensei in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. The taikai was
held at the Fukaya Indoor Sports Stadium and the competition was
attended by approximately 2500 kenshi (martial arts students) and a
similar numbers of spectators. James was as quoted as saying the win was
surprising, but we heard that many of the other contestants were running
scared of our 6 foot giant with a number of the competitors not showing.
It is the first such win for any Australian kenshi in an overseas
competition.
Needless to say our own Sensei, Dr Andy
Tan who is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Faculty
and our other seniors were delighted to hear of the win and now more
focused than ever on the development of all our Kenshi through the
practice of Shorinji Kempo. For those QUT students looking for a
physical challenge tempered by real life philosophies or those that just
want to have fun and build their confidence please come in and join us
in the SG Sport and Recreation Centre any Wednesday, Friday or Sunday.
The wonderful staff at the SG Sport and Recreation Centre will be
pleased to pass on the details of our training times or alternatively
check current times elsewhere on this website.
The Oceania Regional Study Session for 2004
and will held in the Gold Coast, Queensland over the period 12-14
November.
Please contact your branch master for
application forms if you are intersted in attending.
